Food, floats and fireworks! We spent yesterday afternoon celebrating the start of Fiestas Patrias by attending Corso Wong, a huge parade organised by Wong supermarket. Some of the main streets of Miraflores were closed to host the journey of sponsored floats, marching bands and dancers. There were food sellers galore (think toffee apples, candyfloss, popcorn, picarones and emoliente) and it ended with brightly coloured fireworks that lit up the sky over Kennedy Park and the rest of Miraflores. So much fun!!

And to top it off I ended my night with a pork sandwich from La Lucha. Chicharron (fried pork), camote (sweet potato) and mayonnaise, all tucked into a warm bread roll. You must come here if you are in Lima, the sandwiches are fantastic, and they even serve thick cut chips made from purple potatoes! A great end to the weekend!

This week I have been:

WATCHING // Guerra Mundial Z (or World War Z in English). Scared the pants off me, but then I’m a bit of a wuss. It also echoed some of the subjects I was reading about in Inferno last week, which made it quite topical for me! Worth a watch!

EATING // Fantastic Italian food at Il Piccolo Pomodoro in Surco. Amazing garlic bread, pizzas, pastas (including a saffron risotto served next to melt in the mouth ossobuco) and tiramisu. It is one of my favourite restaurants in Lima, and they have live music every Wednesday night in the form of a tenor singing some Italian classical pieces. He has a phenomenal voice and so the tables book up every week; my advice is book early!

VISITING // Corso Wong in Miraflores! Put it in your diaries for next year!

My top 5 online internet finds (in no particular order):

  1. I found this on Pinterest. Camping in tiny luxury!
  2. Friends getting married this year? Me too! Give the bride, or her bridesmaids, one of these for the big day!!
  3. Want to funk up your guacamole? Apparently pomegranate and mango are the answer!
  4. School is out! Need some activities for the kids at home? Check these out…..maybe do cress, then you can eat it too!
  5. Rediscovered this weekend on search for this years birthday cake! Hi Mum!
